A charming rural village on the banks of the Scheldt, benefiting from the dynamism of the Scarpe-Escaut regional nature park, Hergnies has emerged as a centre for green and waterborne tourism in the Valenciennes area. The Grand Marais nature site and ponds are some of its main attractions. A “land and water” themed discovery trail gives you an opportunity to discover the area travelling via the village centre and its impressive nature square, a throwback to the former meadow where geese flocks were pastured, with the rearing of these birds being one of the village’s traditional activities.
