The museum of Valenciennes belongs to the generation of fine arts museums constructed under the frenh Third Republic characterized by large spaces and monumental proportions, which here admirably enhance a prestigious collection.

Ranging from Gallo-Roman archaelogy to the 20th Century, the highlights of this collection of works by Flemish artists (Rubens, Jordaens, and Van Dyck) and important 19th Century sculpture centring on Jean Baptiste Carpeaux. With the artist Watteau, who was also a native of Valenciennes, the charm of the French 18th Century (Pater, Boucher, Hubert Robert, Watteau de Lille, etc.) can be enjoyed to its full in the two galleries overlokking the garden.
