The Belfry and Guardroom in Condé-sur-l’Escaut. (XVIII.)
On the western side of Place Pierre Delcourt we find the belfry and its guardroom. This is an interesting example of the sharing of municipal and state activities locally in the 18th century. This belfry is doubtless one of the last buildings of this type built in the France of the Ancien Régime and the smallest in the Nord-Pas de Calais region. Along with the town hall, it forms the centrepiece of the new urban planning design adopted by the town during the Enlightenment.
